Computer Assisted Translation Tool for Easy WordCount

CATCount is useful software tool for translation industry professionals. It greatly eases the task of accounting for Computer Assisted Translation jobs.

CATCount does this by translating the complex CAT Scheme into one easy number, i.e. CATCount. Additionally, it provides the great features of printing and export of the used CAT Scheme together with original wordcounts, and the resulting CATCount. Wordcount analysis logs of Trados Translator's Workbench are processed automatically.

The concept of using a single number is not new, and has been used extensively by many translation agencies worldwide under various names eg averaged wordcount, weighted wordcount, equivalent wordcount, etc.

Although the regular distribution of distinct categories of wordcount information by CAT Tools (Trados, SDLX, Deja Vu, Star Transit) is useful for analysis in general, it is not very convenient as far as accounting is concerned. CATCount takes the solution of the problem to the next level by providing an easy interface between translation agencies and freelance translators, and within teams of translators.

CATCount is a freeware product. So feel free to use it for unlimited time and share it with your colleagues.

You can load CATCount Scheme from file with .cat extension or enter it manually.

Manual entry is possible by altering the numbers in Percentage Payment of Full Word Rate column:

Using Load command of the Scheme menu you can automatically load the scheme saved previously by Save/Save As commands in the Schemes folder or in another folder on your hard drive.

example.cat and example2.cat CATCount Scheme are installed by default. Their purpose is to illustrate the work of CATCount only. Actual CAT schemes can differ in various translation agencies.

Entering Wordcounts:

You enter wordcounts of particular translation job in the Words column:

The total wordcount is displayed in the panel below the individual wordcounts (XTranslated, Repetitions, 100%, 95%-99%, 85-94%, 75%-84%, 50%-74%).

Alternatively, if you have the Trados Translator's Workbench analysis log file you can click the Load Log button on the left of the Total Wordcount panel to load this log automatically:

Using CATCount results:

After setting up CATCount Scheme and entering wordcounts of your translation job or translation quote, you will see the result of calculation in the Total CATCount panel, right below individual (XTranslated, Repetitions, 100%, 95-99%, 85-94%, 75-84%, 50-74%, No Match) CATCounts (equivalent wordcounts to be paid at full word rate).

Now you can use this single number in your accounting program as a simple and correct evaluation of the Computer-Assisted Translation Job, to be paid by your client at the full rate.

If you are using Translation Office 3000 or Projetex 2006 (accounting and project management products by Advanced International Translations), you have probably activated CATCount from within them, and CATCount will automatically be entered in the proper field of the translation job or translation quote.

Apart from using CATCount number itself, you can copy to clipboard, export or print complete results of your count using the Output menu.

To run an export of results click on the Export command of the Output menu.

The Exporting Data dialog box appears:

Select the necessary export format in the Export format drop-down list. You can export CATCount results into the following formats:

Microsoft Word (.DOC)
Hyper Text Markup Language (.HTML)
Microsoft Excel (.XLS)
Text (.TXT)
Rich Text (.RTF)
Comma Separated Text (.CSV)
Tab Separated Text (.CSV)

You can choose whether you want to View only CATCount results or Export to file.
If you select the View Only option...

The results will be written into a temporary file and displayed immediately.
If you select Export to file option...

The Save CATCount Results dialog box appears asking you to choose the location and file name.

The Clipboard command of the output menu outputs CATCount results into the clipboard in text format, the Print command prompts to select a printer and sends the results to the printer.
